Remote work allowance — which companies actually pay for your home setup?

by Fahmi Razali·May 24, 2026

When WFH became common, a lot of companies quietly benefited from employees subsidising their own office setup. Desks, chairs, monitors, internet — all employee cost.

Companies that do it well: typically MNCs that have formalised WFH policies. Common structures include a one-time equipment allowance (RM1,000–3,000), monthly internet subsidy (RM100–150/month), or a flexible annual benefits account that can be used for home office equipment.

Some companies let you borrow company equipment. Better than nothing but you don't own it if you leave.

If your company hasn't addressed this: you can claim home office-related expenses on your personal income tax under certain categories. Not a replacement for a company allowance, but reduces the net cost.

If you're negotiating a remote role, ask about the setup allowance upfront. It's a reasonable question and how they answer it tells you a lot.

My job is 100% async — no meetings, no calls, no set hours. It took three months to adjust but now I cannot imagine going back.

Async requires excellent writing. I've seen async cultures fail because people write ambiguously and create confusion that would have taken 30 seconds in a call.

The companies doing async well all have invested in documentation. It's the culture that enables async, not the other way around.
