Career coaching in Malaysia — is it worth paying for? My honest experience
by Hilmi Hamdan·May 24, 2026
Paid RM350/hour for 4 sessions with a certified career coach after feeling stuck mid-career.
What it gave me:
- A structured space to articulate things I'd been circling for months
- Frameworks for evaluating my options that I found genuinely useful
- Accountability, having to explain my thinking to someone else forced clarity
What it didn't give me:
- Specific industry insight (my coach wasn't in my sector)
- Network or contacts
- Answers I didn't already have somewhere, more like a process for surfacing them
Was it worth RM1,400? Probably, for me. But I could have gotten much of the same value from a trusted senior colleague, if I had one.
Recommendation: Find a coach with specific experience in your sector if career direction is the goal, not just personal development.
