Promotion to Senior Exec at MNC, increment feels kinda low

by Haziq Rohani·August 30, 2026

My company just offered me a promotion to Senior Executive, but i'm not sure if the salary increment is enough. I've been an Executive for three years here at this MNC in Cyberjaya, currently on RM5,500. The new offer is RM6,200.

Its a good step up in title and responsibilities, which I appreciate. I'll be:
- taking on two junior staff to mentor
- handling more direct client communications
- given full ownership of larger projects.

i like the team here and the work culture is okay, but this increment (around 12.7%) feels kinda low for the added workload and stress. A friend at a different MNC got nearly 20% when they moved from Exec to Senior Exec last year. This makes me wonder if i'm being undervalued.

Should I try to negotiate for more, or is this the standard for promotions in Malaysia? Part of me thinks I should just accept it already and start looking outside. What would you guys do?

RM700 is not bad actually for internal promotion, sometimes they factor in other benefits too. What about your performance bonus structure, did that change? If the new title helps your CV, then it's worth considering for future moves.

Check Glassdoor for Senior Exec roles in Cyberjaya, especially for MNCs. See what the market rate is for that role and experience. If you're really underpaid, use that data to negotiate. If not, maybe it's time to test the waters outside.

Same situation here last year. I tried to negotiate an extra RM300 and they gave it to me. But ultimately still felt low so I left 6 months later. If you feel undervalued, then you probably are.
