Fixed it by tailoring my cover letter to explain why I wanted to step back temporarily. Got hired on the 4th try.
Addressing the mismatch proactively in the first 30 seconds is the key. Do not make them ask.
The 'I want more ownership than I could get at a larger company' framing resonated with my interviewer.
