I cold-applied to 100 jobs in Malaysia — here's the data
by Ezekiel Lam·May 23, 2026
Tracked every application for 3 months. Here are the actual numbers.
Total applications: 100
No response: 61 (61%)
Automated rejection: 18 (18%)
HR screen call: 13 (13%)
First round interview: 7 (7%)
Final round: 3 (3%)
Offers received: 1 (1%)
What affected response rate:
- Applications with a tailored cover letter: 19% response rate vs 9% without
- Applying within 48 hours of a listing going up: significantly higher response rate
- Roles where I had a LinkedIn connection at the company: 40% response rate
The uncomfortable conclusion: Cold applying is a numbers game with low odds. The referral advantage is enormous and not talked about enough in job hunting advice.
If I did it again: I'd spend 50% of my time on active applications and 50% on network conversations specifically with people at companies I wanted to join.
