Red flags in Malaysian job descriptions you should run from

by Fiona Leong·May 25, 2026

After reading hundreds of job descriptions this year, here are the patterns that predict a bad experience.

"Fast-paced environment" without specifics usually means: understaffed, chaotic, and your capacity will be assumed to be unlimited.

"Wear many hats" at a company that's not an early-stage startup: probably means they can't afford to hire enough people and will expect one person to do the work of three.

"Self-starter who doesn't need hand-holding" often translates to: no onboarding, no clear processes, and you'll be blamed when things fail.

"KPI-driven culture" paired with vague metrics in the JD: could be good, but often means aggressive performance pressure with unclear expectations.

No salary range listed (2025): Not a dealbreaker by itself, but paired with other flags, suggests the company is either disorganised or planning to lowball you.

"Must be willing to work beyond normal hours when needed" in the JD: working beyond normal hours is expected to be regular, not occasional.

I applied to 90 jobs in 3 months of active searching. Quality vs quantity: the 10 tailored applications in month 3 produced more interviews than 80 generic ones in months 1—2.

Every rejection improved my application for the next one. By application 50, my tailoring approach was significantly better than application 1. Volume teaches.

After 4 months of job search, I hired a career coach for RM 1,200. The mock interviews alone were worth it. Landed a role 3 weeks later at 22% above my previous salary.
