Perlis is Malaysia's smallest state — a compact northern territory bordering Thailand, with a population of under 260,000. What it lacks in size, it makes up for in distinctive character: paddy fields, mango orchards, and a quiet, close-knit community define life in Perlis.
Kangar is the state capital and main commercial centre, hosting government offices, retail outlets, and services businesses. Arau, a short distance away, is the education hub anchored by UniMAP (Universiti Malaysia Perlis) — the state's largest employer and the primary engine of youth employment and talent development in the region.
DOSM's Household Income Survey 2024 places Perlis's median household income at approximately RM 5,000/month, reflecting a predominantly public-sector and agriculture-dependent economy. For professionals who prefer small-town life with clear career paths in education, government, or agribusiness, Perlis offers a unique work-life balance.
Perlis is the smallest job market in Malaysia. Fresh graduates earn RM 1,700–2,400/month, and mid-career professionals in education and government earn RM 2,800–4,500/month. The highest-paying private sector roles are in manufacturing and technical services tied to border trade with Thailand.
UniMAP in Arau is the anchor employer for education-sector roles. Kangar's government complex concentrates public administration jobs. Small border-trade businesses along the Padang Besar corridor generate retail and logistics employment. Perlis Plantation Berhad and sugar cane farming are the main agribusiness employers.
