Wipro is a very large company - with a broad range of job opportunities - especially for a technology person starting out. They have also wisely recruited some extremely talented individuals that can push the company forward from a technology, business, and cultural perspective. As an Indian-owned company, they are quite admired for their impact on the Indian economy and philanthropic efforts. Many very talented individuals work here and, if you can connect with them, there is much to learn.
The company is so large and so heavily focused on cutting costs, that they either lose employees or lose employee engagement. There is less of an emphasis on high quality deliverables and more on meeting projects on time and under budget. As a result, many of the employees - afraid to speak up - will do whatever they have to in order to meet “on time and under budget.” There seems to be a general lack of caring or pride in their work — because HOW they do their work is basically disregarded. They have no discipline around quality or performance reviews. Most employees doing excellent work will be rated a 3 on a 1-5 scale. But - they also believe in promoting people who have simply been in a job for a few years. In the Indian workplace, promotions along a career continuum are vital to the Indian culture when seeking work. That’s good for Indians — not so great for Americans. At Wipro HR has a very heavy role in decision making and tends to perpetuate the desires of established and connected inside leaders — which creates insular thinking and avoidance of change.
