Cloud Engineer in Malaysia: Which Certification to Take First

By SuperJobs Team
Quick Answer: The cheapest credible route into a Malaysian cloud job is one foundational certification plus one associate certification on a single provider: AWS Certified Cloud Practitioner (CLF-C02, US$100) then Solutions Architect Associate (SAA-C03, US$150), Microsoft AZ-900 (US$99) then AZ-104 (US$165), or Google Cloud Digital Leader (US$99) then Associate Cloud Engineer (US$125). Pick the provider your target employers already run, not the one with the nicest logo: Azure for Malaysian banks and insurers, AWS for startups and regional product companies, Google Cloud as a data specialisation on top of one of those. The pay is good, with Jobstreet's August 2026 role data putting cloud engineers at roughly RM6,000 to RM8,400 a month, but the certification choice is the part you control in your final semester.
Two of the three hyperscalers now run live cloud regions on Malaysian soil. AWS opened its Asia Pacific (Malaysia) Region in August 2024, and Microsoft's Malaysia West region in Kuala Lumpur reached general availability in 2025. Google's is under construction rather than live: it announced a US$2 billion investment in May 2024 and broke ground at Elmina Business Park in Selangor, but Google Cloud's own locations page listed 43 regions and no Malaysian one when checked in August 2026. Two live regions are still enough to change what a local cloud job looks like: data stays onshore, latency drops, and someone in Cyberjaya or Bangsar South has to run it. The certification you sit for in your final semester now points at a real hiring manager.
AWS has said its Asia Pacific (Malaysia) Region carries about RM29.2 billion (US$6.2 billion) of planned investment through 2038, is estimated to add RM57.3 billion to Malaysia's GDP, and will support an average of more than 3,500 full-time equivalent jobs a year at external businesses over that period.
Why Cloud Is One of Malaysia's Best-Paying Tech Fields
Three separate multi-billion commitments landed within about eighteen months of each other. Microsoft committed US$2.2 billion to cloud and AI infrastructure in Malaysia over four years, announced in 2024, and has since signalled intent to build a second Malaysian region. Google announced US$2 billion in May 2024 for its first Malaysian data centre and cloud region, projecting more than US$3.2 billion of economic impact by 2030. AWS put RM29.2 billion behind its Malaysian region through 2038.
Capital of that size does not sit idle. It creates migration projects, and migration projects create headcount.
The pay gap shows up in the platform data. Jobstreet's August 2026 role pages put DevOps Engineer at RM12,000 a month, Site Reliability Engineer at RM9,500 and Cyber Security Engineer at RM6,600. Set those beside DOSM's national median of RM2,793 for 2024 and the multiple runs from about 2.4 times for a cyber security engineer to 4.3 times for a DevOps engineer. The cloud engineer band itself, RM6,000 to RM8,400, works out at roughly 2.1 to 3.0 times the national median. Those are roles that mostly ask for two to four years of experience rather than a decade.
Two other things make cloud unusually friendly to fresh graduates. First, the skill is certifiable, so a hiring manager can verify what you know without a referral. Second, the vendors publish the entire syllabus for free, so a student in Kuantan and a student in Kuala Lumpur study the same material. If you want to see what employers are actually asking for, read live postings on IT and cloud jobs in Malaysia before you spend a ringgit on training.
AWS Career Path and Certifications
AWS structures its credentials in four tiers: Foundational, Associate, Professional and Specialty. For a fresh graduate, only the first two matter.
The Foundational tier has two exams. AWS Certified Cloud Practitioner (exam code CLF-C02) costs US$100 and covers billing, core services, the shared responsibility model and basic architecture. AWS Certified AI Practitioner (AIF-C01) also costs US$100, runs 90 minutes with 65 questions, and sits at the same difficulty tier but focuses on generative AI, foundation models and responsible AI rather than infrastructure.
The Associate tier is where hiring interest starts. AWS Certified Solutions Architect – Associate (SAA-C03) costs US$150, runs 130 minutes and asks 65 multiple-choice or multiple-response questions on designing cost-optimised and performance-optimised systems. AWS also offers a Data Engineer – Associate credential if you lean toward pipelines rather than infrastructure.
Above that sit Solutions Architect – Professional and specialty credentials such as Security. Neither is a fresh-graduate exam. Attempting one without production experience mostly wastes an exam fee.
The AWS money details students miss
Every AWS certification is valid for three years from the date you earn it, after which you must recertify to keep it active. Once you hold any active AWS certification, your certification account issues a 50 per cent discount voucher toward your next exam. That turns a Cloud Practitioner-then-Solutions Architect run into US$100 plus US$75, not US$100 plus US$150.
There is also a fully funded route. In January 2026, AWS signed a RM4.3 million social impact agreement with Exabytes to run AWS re/Start and a diploma pathway in Malaysia over two years. AWS re/Start is a free 12-week instructor-led programme open to Malaysians aged 18 and above with no prior IT background, aimed at unemployed, underemployed and career-switching candidates, with funding tied to completion rates, certifications earned and job placements. MDEC has run a separate AWS Tech Alliance skills-to-jobs collaboration alongside it.
Azure Career Path and Certifications
Microsoft splits its credentials into Fundamentals, Associate, Expert and Specialty, and the pricing is simpler than AWS: every Fundamentals exam is US$99, and every Associate, Expert and Specialty exam is US$165 at United States pricing. Microsoft sets the fee per country, so the ringgit figure at Pearson VUE checkout can differ and may include tax.
Start with AZ-900, Microsoft Azure Fundamentals, at US$99. It is genuinely introductory and assumes no technical background.
The credential that gets interviews is AZ-104, Microsoft Certified: Azure Administrator Associate, at US$165. You get 100 minutes, and the exam is proctored with possible interactive components. It assesses five areas: managing Azure identities and governance, implementing and managing storage, deploying and managing compute resources, implementing and managing virtual networking, and monitoring and maintaining Azure resources. Microsoft expects familiarity with PowerShell, Azure CLI, the Azure portal, ARM templates or Bicep, and Microsoft Entra ID. Learn those five things and you can hold a conversation in an interview.
AZ-305, Azure Solutions Architect Expert, is the next step at US$165, and it is a design exam rather than an administration exam. Leave it until you have shipped something real.
Renewal works differently on Azure
Microsoft role-based certifications carry a 12-month renewal frequency, and renewal is free. You pass an unproctored online assessment on Microsoft Learn before expiry, at no cost. Compare that to AWS, where recertification means sitting a paid exam again every three years. Over a five-year career the Microsoft path is cheaper to maintain, which matters if you are paying out of your own pocket rather than through an employer training budget.
Microsoft also publishes an Exam Replay offer that bundles a retake, worth checking before you register if you are nervous about a first attempt.
GCP Career Path and Certifications
Google Cloud runs Foundational, Associate and Professional tiers, and the entry ladder is the cheapest of the three providers.
Cloud Digital Leader is the foundational exam at US$99. It is aimed at people who need to understand cloud capabilities and business value rather than configure anything.
Associate Cloud Engineer is the one to target, and it costs US$125 plus tax where applicable. The exam runs two hours with 50 to 60 multiple-choice and multiple-select questions, has no formal prerequisites, and Google recommends six or more months of hands-on Google Cloud experience. It is offered online-proctored or at a test centre, in English, Japanese, Spanish and Portuguese. The certification is valid for three years.
Google's renewal terms sit between the other two. If you renew within the eligibility window, the renewal exam costs US$75 rather than the full US$125, and it is a shorter one-hour, 20-question paper.
Professional Cloud Architect costs US$200, as do the other professional exams including Cloud Developer, Data Engineer, Cloud Security Engineer and Cloud DevOps Engineer. Those are three-to-five-year credentials, not graduate ones.
Where GCP actually wins for a Malaysian graduate
Google Cloud has no live Malaysian region yet, and that is the honest reason there are fewer junior GCP openings here than AWS or Azure ones. Malaysian users are served from the Singapore region, so workloads with an onshore data residency requirement cannot sit on Google Cloud today. What the certification still buys you is analytics depth. If your degree was statistics, data science or actuarial science and you want an analytics-flavoured cloud role, Associate Cloud Engineer plus BigQuery fluency is a sharper specialisation than a third generic certificate. Treat it as a second credential alongside AWS or Azure rather than your only one.
Salary Comparison: AWS vs Azure vs GCP in Malaysia
Publicly available Malaysian salary data does not break out pay by cloud provider. Employers pay for the role, the years and the scope, not the logo on your badge.
| Role | Reported monthly figure (Malaysia) |
|---|---|
| Cloud Engineer | RM6,000 – RM8,400 |
| Site Reliability Engineer | RM9,500 |
| DevOps Engineer | RM12,000 |
| Cyber Security Engineer | RM6,600 |

Which Cloud Should a Fresh Grad Start With?
Answer four questions in order. Stop at the first one that gives you a clear result.
1. Where do you want to work in three years? Malaysian banking, insurance and government-linked employers have long-standing Microsoft estates, and enterprise agreements tend to pull cloud spend toward Azure. Maybank's August 2025 five-year partnership with Microsoft, reported at RM1 billion, names Azure as its primary cloud platform and covers Microsoft 365 Copilot for 44,000 employees. If a licensed bank in KL Sentral is the goal, AZ-900 and AZ-104 are the efficient pair.
2. Do you want startups, e-commerce or regional tech? AWS has the longest local track record and the largest partner network, and its Asia Pacific (Malaysia) Region has been live since August 2024. Product companies and scale-ups skew this way. The named Malaysian adopters are listed in the employer section below.
3. Is your degree data-heavy? Add Google, do not start with it. There is no live Google Cloud region in Malaysia yet, so local junior openings are thinner than on the other two, but BigQuery-centred analytics work is the one area where a Google credential sets you apart. Pair Associate Cloud Engineer with an AWS or Azure associate rather than betting on it alone.
4. Still undecided? Count job ads. Open technology and software engineering jobs, search "AWS", then "Azure", then "GCP", and compare how many current Malaysian postings mention each. Do this yourself rather than trusting any article, including this one, because the mix shifts every quarter.
What actually transfers between providers
The concepts are the same everywhere. A virtual machine is EC2, an Azure VM or a Compute Engine instance. Object storage is S3, Blob Storage or Cloud Storage. Identity is IAM, Microsoft Entra ID or Cloud IAM. Networking, subnets, security groups and load balancers behave similarly enough that your second provider takes roughly a third of the time your first one did.
So the real cost of picking wrong is a few weekends, not a career. What does hurt is collecting three foundational certificates from three vendors and holding no associate-level credential in any of them. One provider taken to associate level beats three half-finished ladders. If you later want the design track rather than the operations track, our guide to cloud architecture careers in Malaysia maps that progression.
Building Portfolio Projects to Get Hired
A certificate proves you can pass an exam. A repository proves you can build. Malaysian hiring managers interviewing fresh graduates typically ask what you deployed and what it cost you, so have an answer.
Four projects that hold up in an interview:
A static site with a real domain. Host it on object storage behind a CDN, put a .my domain in front, force HTTPS. Cheap, quick, and it forces you to touch DNS, certificates, caching and bucket permissions.
A three-tier app defined entirely in code. Write the network, compute and database in Terraform, commit the state configuration properly, then destroy and rebuild the whole stack from one command. Infrastructure-as-code is the single most requested junior skill in Malaysian cloud postings.
A pipeline that deploys on merge. GitHub Actions to a container service, with a staging environment and a rollback path. Screenshot a failed deployment and explain how you caught it.
Something with Malaysian open data. Pull a dataset from data.gov.my, load it into a managed warehouse, schedule a refresh, and publish a dashboard. This is the project that separates you from candidates who only did the tutorial.
Two practical warnings. Set a billing alert before you deploy anything, because free tiers expire and a forgotten load balancer runs up a real bill in ringgit. And write a short README for each project explaining the architecture decision you made and the one you rejected, since that paragraph often becomes your interview answer. Run your CV through the SuperJobs CV checker once the projects are listed, and keep the repository links above the education section.
Malaysian Companies Actively Hiring Cloud Engineers
Start with the three cloud providers themselves. AWS and Microsoft run live Malaysian regions and Google is building one, and both live regions and construction projects need local operations, solutions architecture, support and partner-facing staff.
Then work outward through publicly documented adopters. AWS names FarmByte, Pos Malaysia, 123RF, Carsome Malaysia and RTM among its Malaysian customers, and Maxis was reported in February 2026 to have migrated workloads onto the AWS Malaysia Region. On the Azure side, Maybank is the largest publicly named adopter, under the Microsoft partnership described in the decision framework above. Exabytes runs a Centre of Cloud Excellence tied to the AWS re/Start programme.
Beyond named adopters, four categories reliably carry cloud headcount in Malaysia: licensed banks and insurers under Bank Negara's technology risk requirements, telecommunications operators, global shared-services and GBS centres in KL, Penang and Johor, and cloud consultancies and managed service partners. That last group is the most realistic first employer for a fresh graduate, because partners hire in cohorts, pay for your certification, and rotate you across several client environments in your first two years.
If you have not graduated yet, a cloud or platform engineering internship placement is worth more than a third certificate. Six months of production access beats any exam.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is a cloud certification worth the cost for a Malaysian fresh graduate?
For most graduates yes, provided you take one provider to associate level instead of collecting foundational badges from all three. A foundational plus associate pair costs about US$250 on AWS, US$264 on Azure or US$224 on Google Cloud at 2026 list prices, and it is the cheapest verifiable proof of skill a candidate with no work history can buy. Free structured routes exist too, including AWS re/Start. For the pay detail behind that decision, see our cloud and DevOps salary guide for Malaysia.
Which cloud certification should a fresh graduate get first?
Pick one provider and take it to associate level rather than collecting foundational certificates from all three. Choose Azure if you are targeting Malaysian banks, insurers or government-linked employers, since those estates are usually Microsoft-heavy. Choose AWS for startups, e-commerce and regional product companies. Choose Google Cloud if your degree is data or analytics focused. The concepts transfer between providers, so a wrong first choice costs weeks, not years.
How much do AWS, Azure and Google Cloud exams cost?
At standard United States pricing in 2026, AWS Certified Cloud Practitioner costs US$100 and Solutions Architect Associate costs US$150. Microsoft charges US$99 for Fundamentals exams such as AZ-900 and US$165 for Associate exams such as AZ-104. Google Cloud charges US$99 for Cloud Digital Leader and US$125 for Associate Cloud Engineer. Prices vary by country and may include tax, so check the figure shown at registration.
Do cloud certifications expire?
Yes, and the renewal terms differ. AWS certifications are valid for three years and require sitting a paid exam again to recertify, though holding an active AWS certification gives you a 50 per cent discount voucher toward your next exam. Microsoft role-based certifications renew every 12 months for free through an unproctored online assessment on Microsoft Learn. Google Cloud certifications last three years, with a shorter renewal exam priced at US$75.
Do I need a computer science degree to become a cloud engineer in Malaysia?
No. Cloud certifications have no degree prerequisite, and Google Cloud's Associate Cloud Engineer exam lists no formal requirements at all. Free structured routes exist too: AWS re/Start is a 12-week instructor-led programme open to Malaysians aged 18 and above with no prior IT background, funded in Malaysia through a RM4.3 million agreement announced in January 2026. Employers still expect working Linux, networking and scripting skills, whatever your degree says.
Is AWS or Azure more in demand in Malaysia?
Both have large Malaysian footprints. AWS opened its Asia Pacific Malaysia Region in August 2024 with about RM29.2 billion of planned investment through 2038, while Microsoft's Malaysia West region went live in 2025 backed by a US$2.2 billion commitment. Rather than relying on any published ranking, search current Malaysian job listings for each provider name and count the results yourself, because the balance shifts every few months.
