Data center sales executive
Lots of resources almost too many... Too many ppl on one call
Reorganizations and shifts frequently occur. Subpar pay. People in the bureaucratic chain who can block your success just because they don't like you. So you have to be good at playing politics here.
Technical support engineer
Although I don't have much basis for comparison, the benefits package seems pretty good. 401K is matched to 6%.and has good features. Also, you get to be at the forefront of technology.
It can be a very high pressure environment. First there are a lot of challenging technical problems faced by customers who are sometimes demanding or worse. Also, it's necessary to keep up with lots of policies and procedures - understandable, but it's a lot to keep up with. Finally, everything you do will be logged, recorded, crunched with database driven metrics, and scrutinized. A worse problem is that this isn't the same company I signed up for long ago. Over the years, the suits and bean counters have been devising ways to reduce our pay. The latest kick is the "follow the sun" initiative, and we know what that's all about. (I've had countless customers tell me they're glad they can call in at any time and get domestic support.) Wage increases haven't been keeping up with inflation, putting the squeeze on a lot of us, except those (including several I know) who got a side racket to get by. Last, the corporate culture is "woke." There's a lot worse out there as far as Big Tech goes, but sometimes it gets grating for anyone who doesn't share that ideology.
