Soalan Interview in English: Model Answers for BM-First Candidates

Soalan Interview in English: Model Answers for BM-First Candidates

By SuperJobs Team

Quick Answer: Eight questions cover most English-language job interviews in Malaysia: tell me about yourself, why this company, your greatest weakness, why should we hire you, five-year plans, why you left, salary expectations, and questions for the panel. Memorise the answer structures below (not the scripts word-for-word), and you can handle an English interview even if you think in Bahasa Melayu first. DOSM's Graduates Statistics 2024 puts graduate unemployment at just 3.2%. The jobs are there; the interview is the gate.

This guide gives you a model English answer for every common soalan interview: the Bahasa Melayu prompt first, so you recognise the question, then an answer you can adapt, then notes on what to change for your own story.

SuperJobs hosts thousands of active listings from Malaysian employers, and the large majority of private-sector interviews, especially in KL, Penang and Johor, are conducted partly or fully in English.

Kenapa Interview Dalam English Rasa Susah (And Why the Bar Is Lower Than You Think)

Here is the part nobody tells you: Malaysian employers are not grading your grammar.

A 2025 study published in the Forum for Linguistic Studies, based on interviews with Malaysian employers and graduates, found that employers emphasise clarity, spoken confidence, adaptability and appropriate tone over native-like fluency or grammatical perfection. Separate 2025 research in the International Journal of Research and Innovation in Social Science reached the same conclusion: private-sector employers will consider candidates with average English proficiency if their communication is clear.

Translate that into practical terms. "I are responsible for handle customer complaint" said confidently, with a real example behind it, beats a grammatically perfect sentence mumbled at the table. The panel wants to know: can this person explain a problem to a client, a colleague, a supplier?

The stakes are real, though. Research on fresh graduate unemployment in Malaysia repeatedly names English proficiency as one of the biggest factors separating hired from not-hired. DOSM's 3Q2025 labour data shows about 35.5% of employed degree and diploma holders stuck in low- or semi-skilled work. Better interview English will not fix everything, but it is one of the few levers you fully control in a two-week window.

One more thing before the model answers. For deeper strategy on what each question is really testing, read our full guide to common interview questions in Malaysia; the page you are on now sticks to the exact words to say.

Lapan Soalan Wajib: BM Prompt + English Model Answer

Soalan 1: "Cuba ceritakan tentang diri anda" (Tell Me About Yourself)

Ini soalan pembuka standard. The panel is not asking for your life story or your IC details. They want 60–90 seconds: who you are professionally, what you can do, why you are here.

Model answer (fresh graduate):

"Good morning, and thank you for having me. My name is Aina, and I recently graduated with a degree in Business Administration from UiTM. During my studies, I completed an internship at a logistics company in Shah Alam, where I handled customer scheduling and helped reduce delivery complaints by tracking them in a simple spreadsheet system. I enjoy organising messy processes — that is the part of work I find satisfying. I applied for this role because it focuses on operations support, which matches both my internship experience and the direction I want to grow in."

Jangan mulakan dengan "I was born in Kelantan...". That is the single most common opening mistake panels report.

This question deserves more preparation than any other, because it sets the tone for the whole session. We have a dedicated guide with more variations: how to answer "tell me about yourself" in a Malaysian interview.

Soalan 2: "Kenapa anda nak kerja dengan syarikat kami?" (Why Do You Want to Work Here?)

Jawapan yang gagal: "Because your company is famous and the salary is good." The panel hears that ten times a day.

Model answer:

"I've followed your company for a while — I saw the news about your expansion into halal logistics last year, and I read about your graduate development programme on your careers page. Two things attract me. First, the role itself: it is hands-on operations work, which is what I did during my internship. Second, the company is growing, which usually means more chances to take on responsibility early. I would rather grow with a company that is expanding than wait in line somewhere static."

Nota penting: jawapan ini hanya berkesan kalau anda betul-betul buat homework. Sebut SATU fakta spesifik tentang syarikat: projek, produk, berita, program graduan. One specific fact signals more effort than five generic compliments.

Soalan 3: "Apakah kelemahan anda?" (What Is Your Greatest Weakness?)

Jangan jawab "I'm a perfectionist." Panels have heard it since the 1990s. Tapi jangan pula jujur sampai rosakkan peluang sendiri ("I always late").

The formula: real weakness + what you are already doing about it + evidence it is improving.

Model answer:

"My English speaking is honestly the area I am still working on. I understand English well — I studied in English and I write emails comfortably — but speaking under pressure, I sometimes pause to find the right word. What I have been doing is practising out loud: I record myself answering interview questions, and I have started speaking English with my study group twice a week. It is improving. And I would rather tell you this directly than pretend my weakness is 'working too hard'."

Kenapa jawapan ini berani tapi bijak: it names the exact thing the panel might already be noticing, takes ownership of it, and shows a concrete improvement plan. Employers in the 2025 employability research consistently ranked honesty and self-awareness above polish. Kalau kelemahan anda bukan bahasa, guna formula yang sama untuk kelemahan sebenar anda: time management, public speaking, technical skill tertentu.

Soalan 4: "Kenapa kami patut ambil anda?" (Why Should We Hire You?)

This is the sales pitch question. Struktur: satu kemahiran teknikal + satu kemahiran manusia + satu bukti.

Model answer:

"Three reasons. First, I already know the tools this role uses — I worked with Excel and basic inventory software daily during my internship, so I can contribute in the first month, not the sixth. Second, I am reliable with routine work; my internship supervisor extended my placement by a month because I never missed a reporting deadline. Third, I genuinely want this specific job — operations, not marketing, not sales — so you would be hiring someone who plans to stay and get good at it."

Adaptasi: gantikan tiga sebab tu dengan kekuatan anda sendiri, tapi kekalkan format "reason + evidence". A claim without an example is just noise. "I am hardworking" means nothing; "my supervisor extended my internship" means everything.

Soalan 5: "Di mana anda lima tahun akan datang?" (Where Do You See Yourself in Five Years?)

The panel is checking two things: are you leaving in eight months, and have you thought about your career at all?

Model answer:

"In five years, I want to be a senior executive or team lead in this field — someone the newer staff come to with questions. Realistically, that means spending the first two years getting genuinely good at the fundamentals of this role, then taking on bigger responsibilities as they come. I am not in a hurry to jump companies; I would rather build depth in one place that gives me room to grow."

Elakkan: "I want to open my own business" (panel dengar: 'dia akan resign'), dan "I don't know" (panel dengar: 'tak serius'). Jika anda belum pasti hala tuju kerjaya, luangkan 15 minit dengan SuperJobs career planner sebelum interview; ia bantu anda susun jawapan lima tahun yang munasabah berdasarkan bidang anda.

Soalan 6: "Kenapa berhenti kerja lama?" (Why Did You Leave Your Last Job?)

Peraturan emas: never attack your old boss, even if they deserved it. The panel imagines you saying the same thing about them one day.

Model answer:

"I learned a lot in my previous role, especially handling customers directly. I left because the position had no room to move up — the team was small and the structure was flat. I wanted a role where good performance leads somewhere, and this position has a clearer path. I left on good terms; my former manager is one of my referees."

"I took eight months to care for a family member / to complete my professional certification / to look for the right role rather than any role. During that time I also did X." Then stop talking. Tak perlu jelaskan panjang-panjang; over-explaining sounds like guilt.

Soalan 7: "Berapa gaji yang anda harapkan?" (What Are Your Salary Expectations?)

Jangan bagi satu angka mati, dan jangan jawab "up to company." Both lose you money.

Model answer:

"Based on my research on current market rates for this role in the Klang Valley, I am looking at a range of RM2,800 to RM3,300, depending on the full package — but I am open to discussing it, because the learning opportunity matters to me as much as the starting number."

Naming a researched range signals professionalism; naming a random number signals guesswork.

Soalan 8: "Ada apa-apa soalan untuk kami?" (Do You Have Any Questions for Us?)

"No, everything is clear" is a wasted opportunity. Sediakan dua soalan. Ask about the work, not the leave entitlement.

Model questions:

"Yes, two questions. First, what does a typical first month look like for someone in this role — is there structured training, or more learning on the job? Second, how does the team measure success for this position after the first year?"

Kedua-dua soalan ini menunjukkan anda serius nak deliver, bukan sekadar nak jawatan. Save questions about salary, leave and claims for after the offer.

Frasa Penyelamat: Bila Otak Blank Tengah Interview

Everyone freezes sometimes, including native speakers. What separates candidates is recovering gracefully instead of panicking. Hafal lima frasa ini:

Situasi Frasa penyelamat
Tak faham soalan "Sorry, could you rephrase that question?"
Perlu masa untuk fikir "That's a good question — let me think for a moment."
Tersalah cakap "Sorry, let me put that another way."
Tak tahu jawapan "I haven't faced that situation yet, but here's how I would approach it..."
Hilang idea tengah ayat "The main point I want to make is..."

Asking an interviewer to rephrase is not a weakness. It shows you would rather understand than pretend, which is exactly the trait employers said they valued in the 2025 employability studies.

Cara Berlatih Seminggu Sebelum Interview

Reading model answers is 20% of the work.

Ayat pendek. Kalau satu ayat lebih 20 patah perkataan, potong dua.

Hari 3–4: rakam diri anda menjawab dengan telefon; audio pun cukup. Dengar semula. You will notice fillers ("um", "like", "you know") and sentences that never end.

Practise the salary answer out loud especially; it is the one most people fumble.

Hari 7: rehat, dan baca semula nota syarikat. Sebelum tidur, sebut jawapan "tell me about yourself" sekali sahaja.

Run it through the free SuperJobs CV checker so the document and your spoken answers tell the same story.

?Frequently Asked Questions

Guna ayat pendek, sediakan struktur jawapan untuk 8 soalan biasa, dan hafal frasa penyelamat seperti 'Could you rephrase that question?' untuk situasi tersekat.

What are the most common interview questions asked in English in Malaysia?

Eight questions dominate Malaysian interviews: tell me about yourself, why do you want to work here, what is your greatest weakness, why should we hire you, where do you see yourself in five years, why did you leave your last job, what are your salary expectations, and do you have any questions for us. Prepare structured answers for these eight and you cover most of any interview session.

Sebut 'Sorry, could you rephrase that question?' dengan tenang.

How do I answer the salary expectation question in a Malaysian interview?

Give a researched range, not a single number and not 'up to company'. Check current market rates for your exact role and location first, then say you are looking at that range depending on the full package, while staying open to discussion. Make sure the bottom of your range is a number you can actually accept.

Should I admit my English is weak during a job interview?

If speaking English is genuinely your weak point, naming it as your answer to the weakness question can work well — provided you pair it with concrete improvement steps, such as recording practice answers or joining an English-speaking study group. Self-awareness with an action plan scores better with Malaysian employers than a fake weakness like 'I am a perfectionist'.
