-Many opportunities to learn and grow if you're a go-getter nationally and internationally. Management recognizes good work. -There's more accountability, engagement, and training now than 10 yrs ago. -Great health and family benefits, and corporate has added more in the last 5 years: Beautiful new Houston office, 1% increase retirement contributions per yr of service, 14 wks maternity & 6 wks paid paternity leave, 3 week vacations for new employees, volunteer time off, etc). -Allows flexible work schedules like 9/80 as long as you get all your work done (for office jobs). -Many workers see AL as a lifelong company. It's hard to justify going anywhere else the longer you stay with the company. -People generally try here. -Past complaints the management has been disconnected from the employees are gradually being addressed. They're actually listening! Upper management has really tried to give employees a voice by creating programs to submit new ideas and rewarding them through a points program.
1) Because of the nationwide and international reach of the company, expect to do a lot of traveling or relocation throughout your career unless you plan to stay in a local job without big advancements. Some positions can overwork you due to poor resource management, or if you're a go-getter, you can become one of the "super-performers" in the company, ie those that are hard workers receive more work (which isn't bad if you're looking to move up and get picked for bigger, better jobs, but not great for work-life balance). 2) Lack of follow up on action items from certain groups is still common in the company, no accountability if those groups don't follow through. 3) Since centralizing many corporate function in Houston, a lot of responsibilities have been pushed to the already overwhelmed operation sites. Corporate doesn't have a clue what's going on in satellite operations. Managers are expected to know and stay on top of so much more corporate details on top of running the operation. 4) Some newer employees have come in wanting to make changes, and some become disgruntled after not getting feedback or not seeing the changes as fast as they hoped for. It's a large company afterall, and many old-timers are used to the way work processes go. Unless we get upper management push, and then they monetarily incentivize the rest of the employees to push for change, it's hard to make certain changes.
