My experience at ASW was deeply unsettling and has had a lasting negative impact. I continue to experience anxiety related to workplace environments, particularly concerning inflexible policies, micromanagement, and a lack of empathy from leadership. While many companies are embracing flexible work arrangements, ASW maintains a rigid, regressive approach. During my tenure, employees were required to adhere to a strict nine-hour workday in the office, with no flexibility permitted. This policy demonstrated a fundamental disconnect from the realities of modern work and the importance of work-life balance. Furthermore, this rigid structure was exacerbated by a pervasive culture of micromanagement. My direct manager exhibited an excessive need for control, constantly monitoring team members' Teams status and requiring constant updates. This created a sense of being perpetually surveilled and unable to focus on deep work. The pressure to appear constantly available extended to meetings as well. We were expected to be "camera ready" at all times, maintaining an energetic and engaged demeanor, regardless of the content or length of the meeting. Any perceived "dull face" or lapse in enthusiasm was implicitly discouraged, adding another layer of stress to an already demanding environment. This lack of empathy from senior management was particularly disheartening. A request made by an employee regarding work arrangements during a challenging personal circumstance was met with a dismissive and insensitive response. This interaction, while I choose not to disclose the specifics, highlighted a profound disconnect between leadership and the realities faced by their employees. It significantly eroded my trust in leadership and contributed to a sense of vulnerability in the workplace. This entire experience, from the inflexible work hours and micromanagement to the senior management's insensitive communication, has made me hesitant to trust management in subsequent roles and has reinforced a need for clear and compassionate communication from leadership, reasonable flexibility, and a respectful work environment, which I now prioritize when considering new employment opportunities.
