-HEAVY Politics; if you're not part of the 'circle of friends' of higher management, never expect a decent pay raise let alone a promotion and if you're a 'threat' to the promotion of someone who is part of the 'circle' then be prepared for the escalations / PIP that will surely come your way due to the smallest things. I know someone who leads the team on a huge cost saving effort but was not part of the 'circle' and was terminated due to "poor performance". -No growth. The manager promises training / certifications but on my 2-year stay in Manulife, there was never a training that actually proceeded due to workload and "budget issues" -The management masks "abuse" with "growth" there are numerous instances that the role/responsibilities negotiated during the hiring process was breached. ie. a support resource was expected to take up the business analyst role because the business analyst resigned. -Micromanagement -The onshore counterparts of Manulife do not respect an individual's time. They expect the team to answer queries after working hours (around 11pm to 1am) without setting expectations. No extra pay for these instances either. Another example is a "stand-up" call that lasts for hours that impacts our lunch time (at some point finishes around 12:45pm) and the management is expecting the team to return by 1pm (12nn - 1pm break) -Overtime is logged as "offset" and is part of "cost cutting" and you will have to get the approval of the director-level onshore counterpart to use your offset hours but is expecting you to work extended hours (OT) when needed without question. -Re-organization happens 2-3 times a year. This means if your team is not providing enough value to the business, it is possible that your team will be terminated immediately. I personally will not recommend anyone to work here if you desire genuine career growth but if you're someone who 1. wants a repetitive work environment 2. is fully contented with monthly salaries (atleast +3% increase per year) for reference: I got 6% increase (12% total) yearly in my 2 years stay; I have a rating of 'Highly Effective' this is the second highest rating available in Manulife. 3. loves politics in the workplace and is leveraging politics to work your way to promotion then Manulife is for you. If you have doubts on the items here, be my guest! you can confirm these statements from someone who actually work inside Manulife (I won't be dropping team names).
