What is the average fresh graduate salary in Malaysia in 2026?

The typical fresh graduate offer in 2026 is RM3,250 a month before deductions.

We measured it from live job ads, not a survey. On 30 September 2026, SuperJobs had 11,271 active listings. We kept the full-time roles whose employer asks for no experience and publishes a salary range, which left 1,328 jobs. For each one we took the midpoint of the advertised range, then found the median across all of them.

Two things to keep in mind. First, most employers still hide pay: only 26% of active listings show a range, so these numbers describe the jobs that are open about pay. Second, the figure is basic monthly salary. Allowances, overtime and bonuses come on top and differ a lot between employers.

Why does DOSM say graduates earn RM4,521?

Because DOSM counts every graduate in the workforce, not just new ones.

The Department of Statistics Malaysia (DOSM) reported in its Graduates Statistics 2024, released on 31 October 2025, that the median graduate earned RM4,521 a month in 2024, up 2.5% from RM4,409. The mean was RM5,330. Those figures include graduates at every age and career stage: a 45-year-old manager with a degree counts the same as a 23-year-old in their first job.

So RM4,521 is where a typical graduate's pay ends up over a career, not where it starts. If you compare your first offer with it, almost every offer will look low. Compare your offer with other entry-level offers instead, and use the DOSM figure as a sign of how much room there is to grow.

DOSM's release also shows why the kind of job you take matters. Graduates in skilled jobs had a median salary of RM5,723. Those in semi-skilled jobs had RM2,550, and those in low-skilled jobs RM1,990. A degree alone does not set your pay. The skill level of the role you land does.

How much do fresh graduates earn by industry?

Pay for entry-level roles varies by more than RM1,000 a month between industries.

Sales shows the widest upper range because many sales roles advertise commission on top of basic pay. IT and engineering sit mid-table here, but they grow fastest once you have two or three years behind you. Does Kuala Lumpur pay fresh graduates more than Penang or Johor?

Not at the start. The Kuala Lumpur premium appears later in a career.

The median entry-level offer is the same RM3,250 in Kuala Lumpur, Selangor and Penang. What differs is the top end: a quarter of Kuala Lumpur offers pay RM4,000 or more, against RM3,712 in Penang. Johor's median is RM250 lower.

The gap opens with experience. DOSM's figures for all graduates put Kuala Lumpur's median at RM5,888, Putrajaya's at RM5,723 and Selangor's at RM5,207, the three highest in the country. Kuala Lumpur and Selangor hold most of the head offices, banks and shared-services centres whose senior roles pull those medians up.

Each state has its own pattern:

• Kuala Lumpur and Selangor have the most entry-level jobs by far (over 1,000 of the 1,328), so you get more offers to compare.
• Penang is built around the electrical and electronics industry in Bayan Lepas and Batu Kawan. Engineering graduates are its most sought-after hires; admin and support roles tend to pay less.
• Johor competes with Singapore for the same workers, and the Johor-Singapore Special Economic Zone is bringing in data-centre and logistics investment. Watch that market if you are in IT or engineering.

Rent and commuting usually cost more in the Klang Valley, so the same RM3,250 goes further in Ipoh, Seremban or at home. Before you move for a job, compare what you will have left after rent and transport, not the salary alone.

What is a fresh graduate's take-home pay on RM3,250?

On RM3,250 a month, a single Malaysian employee under 60 takes home RM2,868.25. This assumes you have not opted in to PERKESO's LINDUNG 24 Jam scheme, which is voluntary for Malaysian employees.

Worked example. Nurul is a composite case, not a real person. She graduates from UiTM Shah Alam and joins a marketing agency in Petaling Jaya as a marketing executive on RM3,250 a month, the median entry-level offer. She is single, under 60 and has no children.

Your employer also pays RM424 into your EPF account, plus RM56.85 for SOCSO and RM6.50 for EIS, so the job costs them RM3,737.35 a month. No PCB is deducted at this salary: after the RM9,000 individual relief and EPF relief, the tax due is small enough that the RM400 individual tax rebate cancels it.

Is RM3,000 a good starting salary for a fresh graduate?

RM3,000 is a fair offer, slightly below the typical entry-level offer of RM3,250.

Use the market data as a guide:

• Below RM2,500: in the lowest quarter of entry-level offers. Common in retail, food and beverage and manufacturing, less so in office roles. Ask what the pay review looks like after probation.
• RM2,500 to RM3,250: below or at the median. Normal for admin, logistics, healthcare and many SME roles.
• RM3,250 to RM3,750: above the median. Typical for marketing, sales, IT and accounting.
• Above RM3,750: in the top quarter of entry-level offers. Usually structured graduate programmes, MNCs or roles that need a specific technical skill.

How do you judge an offer against the market?

Follow these steps before you accept:

1. Find your benchmark. Look up your industry in the table above, then check live ranges for your exact role on Salary Insights and in current job listings.
2. Convert to take-home pay. Run the offer through the salary calculator so you compare net pay, not gross.
3. Add up the package. Medical cover, transport and meal allowances, annual leave above the legal minimum, and paid professional exams (common in audit firms) all have a cash value.
4. Price the move. If the job means relocating, ask for a one-off relocation allowance. It is a reasonable request and easier to win than a higher basic salary.
5. Look at year two. A lower starting salary with a clear review after probation can overtake a higher one with no increments. Ask how and when pay is reviewed.

What mistakes do fresh graduates make with salary?

• Comparing an offer with DOSM's RM4,521. That is the median for all graduates at every age. Compare entry-level with entry-level.
• Comparing gross with net. An offer of RM3,500 does not put RM3,500 in your account. EPF, SOCSO and EIS come off first.
• Assuming Kuala Lumpur always pays more. At entry level, the median is the same in Kuala Lumpur, Selangor and Penang. The difference is in the top quarter of offers and in later years.
• Ignoring jobs that hide pay. Three in four listings do not show a range. Ask for the range at the first interview so you do not waste a second one.
• Accepting the first number without asking. Employers expect graduates to ask about the review cycle and the allowances. Asking is not the same as refusing.
