Internship Allowance in Malaysia: How Much Should You Expect?

What is the standard internship allowance in Malaysia?

The standard allowance is around RM950 a month. On 1 October 2026, SuperJobs had 2,122 open internships, of which 528 showed an allowance. Half of those paid between RM800 and RM1,250.

Only 16 of the 528 listings, about 3%, paid less than RM600, and 227 paid RM1,000 or more. Most employers do not publish an allowance at all, so these figures describe the internships that do.

Is there a minimum internship allowance in Malaysia?

No law sets one. The Employment Act 1955 applies to people who have entered into a contract of service, and students on industrial training arranged through their university usually do not. The Minimum Wages Order 2024 applies to employees, not trainees, so the RM1,700 minimum wage does not cover a typical internship.

In practice, two government programmes set a floor for many employers:

• MySIP. Employers in TalentCorp's National Structured Internship Programme get a double tax deduction on internship costs only if they pay at least RM600 a month for degree and master's students, or RM500 for diploma and certificate students, for an internship of at least 10 weeks.
• LiKES. SMEs and start-ups claiming TalentCorp's internship matching grant must pay at least RM500 or RM600 a month, depending on the tier.

Some universities also set their own minimum for placements to count toward a degree. Check your faculty's industrial training guidelines.

The spread between industries is narrower for internships than for graduate jobs: most medians fall between RM875 and RM1,150. The bigger differences come from the employer. Sales internships often add commission, which is why their upper range is high.

Kuala Lumpur and Selangor have most of the internships, so you have more offers to compare there, but the median allowance is not higher.

What are MySIP and LiKES, and why do they matter to you?

Both are TalentCorp programmes that make it cheaper for employers to pay interns properly.

For you, these programmes are a negotiating point. If a company offers less than RM600 for a degree internship, it cannot use MySIP or LiKES for you. Asking whether the internship is registered under MySIP is a polite way to raise the allowance.

Do interns get EPF, SOCSO or pay tax?

It depends on whether you are an employee. Students on university-arranged industrial training usually have no contract of service, so the Employment Act and the usual employee contributions generally do not apply. If a company hires you on an employment contract, the rules for employees apply instead. Ask the employer and read your offer letter.

For safety, your university normally requires insurance cover for the placement, and employers still owe interns a duty of care at the workplace.

On tax: an internship allowance counts as income, but it rarely leads to tax. A six-month internship at RM950 a month totals RM5,700, which is below the RM9,000 individual relief every resident taxpayer gets, so no tax is payable on that income alone.

Worked example: what an internship actually pays

Nur Aisyah is a composite case, not a real person. She is a final-year accounting student at UiTM Shah Alam and gets two offers for a 24-week internship:

Offer A pays twice as much and meets the MySIP floor. Before accepting Offer B, Aisyah could ask whether the company would register the internship under MySIP or claim LiKES, which would let it pay at least RM600 at lower cost.

How do you negotiate a better allowance?

1. Know the market. The median is RM950; use the industry table above for your field.
2. Ask about MySIP or LiKES. It shows you know the programmes and gives the employer a reason to pay at least the minimum.
3. Negotiate before you accept. It is hard to change the allowance once you have started.
4. Ask about other support. Transport, meal or accommodation allowances can matter as much as the headline figure.
5. Weigh the learning. A lower allowance can be worth it for a structured programme that often leads to a job offer.

What mistakes do students make with internship pay?

• Assuming the minimum wage applies. It covers employees, not trainees on university placements.
• Not asking about MySIP. Employers paying below RM600 for a degree intern miss the tax incentive.
• Comparing headline figures only. An allowance with transport and meals can beat a higher bare allowance.
• Accepting unpaid work at a profit-making company without question. Unpaid internships are not illegal, but you can ask why the role does not qualify for MySIP or LiKES.
